Building & Maintaining Your Fan Base

Building & Maintaining Your Fanbase

Aside from making great music, building your fanbase is the most important thing that needs to be done in order to be successful in the music industry. As a musician, you should put a lot of effort and dedication into this process. After all, these are the individuals who are going to be listening to your music, buying your music, attending your gigs, and talking about you to their friends.

Here are five steps to help you with this process:

Put Your Music Out There!

Get involved with social networks, blogging, groups, and forums. MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube are definitely the places that first come to mind, but there are many effective sites out there. The more places you become involved with, the larger your fan base will become. However, don’t take on more than you can handle. It’s extremely important to regularly maintain these pages. Doing so will get you loyal fans because they will notice that you’re passionate about your music career.

Stay In Touch With Your Fans!

If you want your fans to remain loyal to you, it’s important to show them that same respect in return. Keep your fans updated with what’s going on in your career, and let them know how much you appreciate them listening to your music and attending your shows. Bottom line is, if you forget about them, they’ll forget about you.

Start A Street Team!

A street team can help you in many ways. Your street team will assist you in keeping in touch with your fans, the promotion of your upcoming shows, spreading the word about your new music, and helping to increase your audience. You can hire individuals to do this type of work, or ask family and friends if you’re on a tight budget.

Book Gigs!

Fans want to see you perform. Book as many gigs as possible with venues, private parties, festivals, or college campuses. You can also connect with other artists/bands to become an opening act at their show. Playing shows will not only increase your fanbase, but it will give you a personal connection with your audience.

Have Contests!

Creating contests will generate a buzz about your upcoming shows, and new releases. Award prizes such as VIP access to a show, free music downloads, personalized gear, or straight up cash. A couple great contests to have are:

  • Be the first to purchase our new cd on this date!
  • Show us you’re our biggest fan!
